Video & Manual
The Homeless Action Committee’s award winning thirty-minute video “Engaging People who are Homeless with a Mental Illness” uses skits, narration, and personal interviews to help viewers develop the knowledge and skills they need to begin working with individuals who are homeless with a serious mental illness.
While intended as a cross training for mental health and homeless providers, the video is appropriate for professional and line staff, as well as support staff, such as secretaries, maintenance workers, and security guards, who are often the first people to encounter this population.
Viewers will learn:
- Basic information on mental illness;
- Effective communication skills;
- The importance of providing basic services and of creating welcoming environments, and
- Systems integration strategies to remove barriers and improve access to services.
The manual includes tools to foster discussion and to develop and improve engagement activities within an agency, including a template to develop a resource manual, and information sheets for posting in common areas.
